Contrary to the views of those you quoted (Gazette, May 5, «Anger among MSO fans»), I feel that the position of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra’s musicians is not unreasonable.
They have already demonstrated considerable flexibility by giving up many of their demands in lengthy labour negotiations with MSO management, and have shown considerable patience in the past several years.
Certainly the long, sustained standing ovation by a full house after Wednesday’s concert was not only a response to the excellent performance but, I judged, a signal of support from those who appreciate this gem of an orchestra and its superb musicians, and who sympathize with it in its current plight.
